The Civic Trust
The Civic Trust inspires and promotes progressive improvements in the quality of urban life for communities. It does this through:
- Engagement. We create and develop dynamic partnerships between government, business and communities to deliver improved local environments.
- Enterprise. We stimulate community-based businesses and foster better working practices in the private sector to create local distinctiveness and successful neighbourhoods.
- Excellence. We set high standards of design and sustainability in the built environment and recognise and reward the very best.
The Civic Trust cares for the built environment - where the vast majority of people actually spend their lives. We have one overriding aim: to make urban places more pleasant for people to live and work in.
We work with voluntary, private and public sectors to revitalise derelict areas, to conserve what is good of the old, but at the same time to encourage a high standard if new building, and to inspire a widespread sense of civic pride.
We are the national voice for nearly 900 civic societies across the country. We run the Civic Trust Awards scheme, one of the most respected architecture and environmental design awards and Heritage Open Days, England's biggest cultural event in which hundreds of properties not usually open to the public, open for free. We also manage the Green Flag Award scheme, the national standard for parks and green spaces. With our in-house Regeneration Unit specialising in renewal projects, we are able to undertake projects that respond to the needs and aspirations of local people.

The Civic Trust Awards were established almost 50 years ago. They recognise and reward those buildings and projects which are not only architecturally significant, but which make a real difference to their local community. Last year the 63 winning schemes included schools, a library, housing, a promenade, community centres and a hospice. From community projects to commercial developments, the Civic Trust Awards celebrate the best of the built environment.
Each scheme is judged by a volunteer team which includes an architect, an access advisor and a local assessor. As the Civic Trust Awards are expanding, we are keen to build our team of local assessors. No experience is necessary - just an interest in, and enthusiasm for, improving the built environment.
